Thread is a fundamental ingredient for any sewing project. Whether by machine or by hand, we can't sew without thread!
Do not use old thread! It’s brittle and will break no matter what you do.
StitchintheDitch.com have an extensive thread selection.
30-40 years ago we were all told use Cotton Thread only for quilting. Times have changed, Embroidery Machines, Home quilting machines, high speed machines have opened up many doors. Now we are advised to use polyester threads, in 100wt, 80wt for our machine quilting and hand work. There will always be a place for Cotton threads, most quilters do all their piecing with Cotton.
A strong fine thread like DecoBob 80wt is also ideal for piecing because it allows the seams to lay flatter, making your piecing not only look better, but it also makes it easier to line up your quilt block patterns. What we find is the newer poly threads are more durable created to produce minimum lint, work beautifully on high speed embroidery machines and quilting machines, no breakages etc.
Quilting looks wonderful with Micoquilter threads, Isacord threads developed for high speed embroidery is now a top favorite with machine quilters and teachers. Although this is a 40wt it sews up like a 60wt. One of our favorites. Omni is now a top favorite for sewing and quilting - a really beautiful thread. Signature threads are in huge demand both Cotton and Cotton Poly, so carry the top favorites with designers and quilters. Glide Thread is the most popular thread for longarm machine quilters, ruler work quilters also love this thread.

micro tex needles are great
MicroQuilter is very forgiving because of its fineness but is also very strong.

Have you ever heard about 80 and 100wt thread? These ultra-fine threads are totally game changers when it comes to piecing, appliqué, quilting, and even as a bobbin thread. However, since most sewing machines are calibrated for medium weight thread, such as a 40 or 50wt, sometimes you may need to make some minor adjustments to your machine when sewing with this thread. We always recommend a needle size of 70/10 or 80/12 when working with these threads.
A bigger needle will punch a hole that’s too large for the thread, so the thread will be sitting in a hole that’s too large for it to fill, resulting in an ugly stitch. The thread will also move around more in the larger eye, so a smaller eye will give you more control of the thread Remember to change your needle after max 8hrs sewing. A bent needle can knock timing out on your machine, a needle that has a burr can cause thread breaks.

Metallic Threads Any time of year is the right time to add a little sparkle to your quilts, but it’s especially fun to use metallic threads on Christmas quilts, holiday table runners, tree skirts, and even stockings and ornaments.
Though metallic threads have a reputation for being unruly and a bit difficult to work with, there are several tricks you can use that can help move it from the naughty list to the nice list in time for the holidays. For best results, even regular sewing thread that’s stack-wound should mount so that the cone can rotate to deliver the thread. Message we receive with Metallic is watch the way they are wound it thread is twisted as it comes off and appears to twist around the spool pin you want to think about a thread stand to allow the thread to relax. Check tension, if thread breaks easily you need to loosen your tension, do a test sw to assure the thread is behaving correctly. Needles - we shall have special metallic needles in stock very soon, we do have Topstitch needles with the large eye that are also great to use, these have a bigger eye allowing for less friction on the thread - this is what causes the thread to fray and break. Don't speed up with this thread - it heats the thread! Sewers Aid is great product to use on these threads
Sashiko embroidery has been used in Japan for centuries, dating back to the Edo era of the 1600s to the 1800s. The Japanese word sashiko means "little stabs" and refers to the small stitches used in this form of needlework.
