Why is the needle hitting the needle plate?
1. The needle is not installed correctly. Make sure that the flat spot of the needle faces the back of the machine.
2. The needle clamp screw could be loose. Use a screwdriver to tighten the screw.
3. The needle could be bent. Replace the needle with a new needle.
4. You have not used the correct combination of fabric, thread, and needle. Refer to the owner's manual and choose the correct combination.

Burrs on the hook assembly are caused by needle strikes.
You don’t have to break a needle to develop a burr on the hook. Just hitting a bulky seam can deflect the needle enough to strike the hook as it rotates, putting a scratch or burr on the metal.
