The most often used fibers for battings are cotton, polyester, wool, blends, bamboo and silk

Bearding (AKA “migration”):
When the fibers separate and start working their way through the weave of the fabric, escaping the quilt. Avoiding bearding is why you want to use a good brand of batting.

Drape:
How a quilt feels and hangs after being quilted. Good batting will allow your quilt to drape around your shoulders following the natural curve of your body without being too stiff. Loft: This refers to the thickness/puffiness of the batting. Cotton is generally low-loft, but it is available in several different thicknesses so you can find higher loft cotton batting. Polyester is generally high-loft. Low-loft batting is easy to needle and handle, and is soft and drape-able. Medium-loft batting adds texture, gives a puffier look, and is warmer, but the higher the loft the harder to machine and hand quilt. High-loft batting is good for highlighting detailed quilting and mimics the look of down, and it is also often used in tied quilts

Long arm quilters tend to love the cotton/poly blend as they combine the easy handling of cotton but add some loftiness of polyester to make the quilting stand out better.

Summer does not mean you have to pack away your beautiful quilts.
Batting Choices
Plan ahead when with choice of Batting and decide if you are using your quilt as a bed quilt in the warmer weather.

Picking a good batting for your quilt is one of the most important decisions you will make during the construction process.
The batting is the middle layer of your quilt, and never seen on the surface. However, your finished quilt's appearance, drape, softness, and comfort are all directly related to the batting you basted in the middle

Polester is not breathable, it may feel light but it will be way too warm for a summer bed quilt. Can be excellent for wall hangings - no shrinkage.

*****Thermore
Thermore Batting: This is a very thin polyester batting that has been through a process to make it a better insulator. There is no bearding and has ultra low loft so you can make a very thin quilt that is super warm
It is exceptionally versatile and can be used successfully wherever low loft and stability is needed or preferred.
Thermore is made with 100% polyester - guaranteed not to beard or migrate.
This batting is excellent for hand or machine quilting.
You can confidently machine, hand wash or dry clean your project. It may be quilted up to 9” apart and will not shrink. Pre-Wash: Not Recommended

*****Wool
I love wool for bed and lap quilts.
Wool holds up beautifully to washing--no dry cleaning necessary.
In fact, it gets softer and better with repeated washings.
Wool has “memory” — it is crease resistant.
Wool breaths well-making it great for quilts you sleep under.

Wool is definitely the warmest option of the natural fibers, and so is not recommended for summer quilts (though it does have the loveliest drape of all the options).
Wool - Super warm and soft, wool is a great choice for winter bed quilts. This special fiber is unique in that it holds no memory so your quilts will never get fold lines and creases, even when folded up tightly for months. For this reason, wool is a very popular show quilt batting

****Cotton
100% Cotton, and Cotton/Poly Blend
Cotton – Feels like a thick flannel. Better option for machine quilting. Generally must be quilted closely.
Washes better without pilling. Shrinks slightly. (This can be good or bad, depending on your personal preference. I personally like when the batting shrinks after the first wash because it softens the quilt and gives it more of a vintage appearance.)
Cotton blend (usually 80% cotton/20% polyester). Very similar to the cotton option, but is less-expensive and doesn’t shrink as much. Good for machine quilting.

For Summer quilt - Cotton is slightly better, though it weighs a lot and will feel heavy even as it breathes.
Cotton naturally clings to the top and bottom fabrics. Consequently, if the project is small enough, there is no need to baste.
also used cotton for larger quilts–it washes well!

*****Bamboo
I recommend bamboo batting for lightweight quilts. It’s silky and lightweight with excellent breathability, yet is still a sustainable natural fiber.

Bamboo is a great choice for summer time bed quilts and lightweight throw quilts. Maybe more cuddly for baby quilts

Silk batting
a natural fiber made from the silkworm cocoon. It is one of the newer batting to come on the market. Batting made from silk is very light, fluffy and drapes like no other batting.
When made into batting silk has many advantages for the quilter:
* Maintains its loft * Light as a feather * Long lasting natural fiber * Warm in winter, cool in summer * Light but strong * Fabulous draping qualities * It is washable * Good for hand and machine quilting * Does not shift, once attached to other fabrics * Breathable Washes similar to cotton in that there is a shrinkage of approximately 5%.
This is minimized with washing in cold water and being laid flat when drying.

Fusible batting is fast, fun and easy.
And it's accurate, too.
Quilters love using fusible batting. That's because they don't have to baste with pins, tacks or stitches. Think of how much time they'll save NOT having to avoid and remove pins!
And, if they need to rearrange the layers, no problem;
They can reposition the fusible batting at any time.
To use fusible batting, arrange your quilt layers and then press with an iron.
The fusible web holds the layers together while you quilt. This helps to prevent puckers on the backside of your quilt.

Size:
you want your batting to be slightly larger than your quilt top (front) and slightly smaller than your quilt back. In other words the backing should be the biggest.

Quilt Batting- From cotton batting to polyester blends, wool, silk and more the batting choices available to quilters are vast
