It could contain oil, mildew and mold.
This bottom pad is specifically cut for a Black Featherweight 221 and can be easily installed.
Replacing your old oil soaked drip pad will help eliminate odors.

A clean machine will run faster and smoother than a dirty machine. Replace old drip pan felt and clean the drip pan
Clean old goo and oil before replacing with new - I use a Q Tip pay attention to the needle bar. We make certain it is clean all the way up and down. If you just purchased a machine and are taking on the service job highly recommend you remove the old felt.

If the old pad was really stuck on the pan and some felt pieces are left behind when you pull the old one off then you might need to do some scraping with a putty knife.
Kerosene is great for cleaning the machines does not damage in any way, if you need to clean the pan try this.
