Millefiori quilts are a type of pattern design popularized by Willyne Hammerstein in her series of books, titled Millefiori Quilts 1, 2, and 3.
The term Millefiori is a combination of the Italian words ‘mile’ and ‘fiori’ (flowers).
Each pattern comes with directions on how to piece together the individual blocks and rows, fabric requirements, required supplies, and numerous photos showing each step. There are plenty of pictures in each book if you are wondering!

There are 3 main Millefiori quilts – The La Passacaglia Quilt (cover of Millefiori 1), Ballet With Kaffe Fassett (cover of Millefiori 2), and Moncarapacho (cover of Millefiori 3).
The La Passacaglia is the most popular quilt of the 3 cover quilts and it was released in 2011. Ballet was released in 2014 and Moncarapacho/Millefiori 3 was recently released
There is no ‘correct’ way to make a Millefiori Quilt.
Technically, there are 3 ways to make a Millefiori quilt; machine, English Paper Piecing, or hand piecing.
All 3 variations will produce the same end result, but all of the Millefiori patterns were designed to be English Paper Pieced or hand pieced.

TheDIYAddict: English Paper Piecing and Designer Quilt Fabrics has TIPS for getting started
1. The best way to get over the hump is to start by sewing a few of the smaller rosettes without the star points and pentagon row. So you will have the five diamond star and the five skinny diamonds.
2. Decide early on if you want all your star points to be the same color or will they be different colors.
3. After you have made several small rosettes, choose your favorite one, and add a pentagon row and the star row. This will allow you to see how the shapes play with each other.
4. You should start the quilt as soon as possible. Don’t get stuck on fabric choices. The best part of quilting is that you can always re-do rosette’s which did not turn out as you please.
5. Don’t give up! It took me almost 18 months to finish my first quilt!

Ballet Quilt
Millefiori quilts are a type of pattern design popularized by Willyne Hammerstein in her series of books, titled Millefiori Quilts 1, 2, and 3.
Her patterns are extremely recognizable due to their unique style that consists of minimal repetition, yet, repetitive use of the same shapes to create numerous intricate blocks.
These blocks often referred to ‘rosettes’ or ‘stars’, come in various shapes and are combined to create an entire quilt.
The first book contains 19 patterns and the second book contains 18 patterns and the 3rd contains 17 patterns.
All of the patterns in the books are Millefiori patterns which consist of similar ‘rosette’ designs.
